Sympathetic new build facade
Strict design and installation parameters guided this new facade project on a Grade 2 listed site in the very centre of Sheffield.
Hamilton was selected by Bowmer & Kirkland to undertake the design, supply and installation of a clay brick-slip facade to two new-build blocks, which were part of an overall re-development of St Vincent’s Church in Sheffield City centre. The site itself was very challenging and the design required us to work closely with B&K’s Design Manager and the system supplier to meet strict planning conditions, as the site was Grade 2 listed.
The project included: the design, supply and installation of 4,000m2 of insulated clay brick slips to SFS frame; 3 colours of 14mm clay brick slips used for the main facade; 20mm feature clay slips used to create the banding details; 200mm & 300mm insulation used to create reveal depths and stepped feature panels; design, supply and installation of PPC aluminium head flashings to meet design requirements; full time, dedicated Site Manager and Contracts Manager throughout the duration of the project to meet programme requirements.
The lightweight build of both blocks, which house 720 student flats for Unite Students, was completed and handed over on time, ready for students to move into in September. The scheme has since gone on to win awards and Hamilton is now involved in several other major builds using this method of construction.
