Government Announces 2029 Deadline for Cladding Remediation

The UK Government has pledged to complete remediation of all high-rise buildings with dangerous cladding by the end of 2029, introducing a Remediation Acceleration Plan to address longstanding concerns.

The plan promises ‘severe penalties’ for landlords failing to remediate medium-rise buildings and emphasises faster action for affected residents.

In today’s announcement of the Remediation Acceleration Plan, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner emphasised that “consistent and urgent effort” is required to address lingering safety concerns. With the first key deadline set for 31 March 2025, the plan includes severe penalties for landlords delaying remediation of medium-rise buildings and grants new enforcement powers to the Building Safety Regulator and local authorities.

While the government claims to have reviewed 80% of England’s medium and high-rise stock, campaigners from End Our Cladding Scandal (EOCS) have expressed disappointment, calling the plan ‘performative’. EOCS criticised ongoing uncertainty for leaseholders and the added complexity of the process.
